BLACKBIRD, CARL: Born 26/3/65, Peterborough. Eldest and most successful of three brothers
who all started off at Mildenhall. By 1984 Carl had reached the top of the tree at National
League level, so he moved to Belle Vue for £20,000 in 1985. Capped for England but didn't
realise his full potential with Aces, moving on to Ipswich (1988) and Reading (1989). Edinburgh gambled big money on signing him early in the 1990 season, at the same time as they introduced Frede Schott. Unfortunately Carl almost immediately regretted the move, and tried to back out and join Poole on the grounds of 'easier travel'. Monarchs would not release him, but perhaps they wished they had after a patchy year. Moved to Long Eaton for a couple of good seasons, then rode briefly for Oxford before bowing out of the sport. |
