ALFONSO, STEFANO: Born 10/1/68, Este, Italy. Former moto-cross rider who didn't try speedway
till he was 24. Even then his career was affected by injury, but he recovered well enough to
achieve his best result, runner-up in the Continental Final at Miskolc, Hungary in 1995.
Missed out in the Grand Prix challenge on his home track at Lonigo, but afer linking with Monarchs
for 1996 he did ride one Grand Prix meeting as a wild card, on the same track. Won his first race
(beating Hamill!) and finished with a creditable 6. Made dramatic progress in the British Premier
League, but his season was virtually ended by a broken arm in June. Managed
a few matches at the end of the season, but wasn't fully fit.
Raced on the Continent in 1998 until making a surprise return for Monarchs in September, replacing Marcus Andersson. Appeared to be let down by poor borrowed machinery,
an impression heightened by a stunning race win at Berwick on Kevin Little's machine.
Failed to return from a trip home to Italy before completing 6 matches, and
hasn't ridden in the UK since, though he rode occasionally in Europe. Rode in a Castagna farewell event late in the 2001 season,
then returned once more in the Italian League 2002, but a broken leg is likely to have spelt the end for what
could have been a top class career.
